Spring Hill Cemetery
Date of Investigation: 11/25/07
Attending members: Robyn, Melissa. Alice, Don Jr, Don Sr, Bobbie and Jessica. Two women were also in attendance as guests of the group.
Equipment used: Thermoscan thermometer, Panasonic mini-dv camcorder, Panasonic digital camera, Cellsensor EMF detector, Extech EMF detector, Olympus digital voice recorder, 2 Panasonic cassette recorders and two other digital cameras as well.
Upon arrival at the cemetery the team retrieved their equipment from the van and proceeded to break up into three groups.
Group one: Melissa, Don Sr, Bobbie and the two female guests.
Group two: Alice & Don Jr
Group three: Robyn & Jessica
The Spring Hill Cemetery is located at 8580 Ft. Dade Ave. in Brooksville, FL. The cemetery is rather isolated as it sits about 1/4 mile off of Ft. Dade Ave. The small, dirt road leading back into the cemetery has many trees that hang over the roadway giving you a tunnel effect. There was an overwhelming smell of rotting meat along that road. We attributed the smell to a dead animal lying somewhere in the woods just beyond the road.
Upon arrival into the cemetery grounds, the trees become a little less dense. The graveyard is a small, rounded area with graves as old the 1800's and as new as 2007. There is a small dirt road that encircles this small cemetery. Beyond the road on the outer circle are dense woods in all directions. The graveyard itself has many trees on the land.
One particular tree is known as the hanging tree. The story goes that the KKK used to perform their gruesome rituals here. They would take the black folks and hang them in the tree. Once the people had died, they were cut down and rolled into unmarked graves. There is also rumored to be an old shack just behind the cemetery property in the woods that houses a meat grinder. It has been told that the Klan would use this meat grinder to torture black folks before they were killed. The shack's exact location and existence is unknown at this time.
The reports from people that have visited the cemetery have been sightings of ghostly groups of spirits crowded around headstones. There are also reports of people seeing the apparition of a man hanging from the Hanging Tree.
People have also reported hearing footsteps in the leaves behind them as they walked alone through graveyard.
Our team spent approximately 2 hours covering the vast majority of the cemetery. The EMF detectors did not seem to pick up any significant spikes. The cassette recorders did not reveal any EVPs but, given the amount of people present during those EVP sessions, those tapes were deemed contaminated.
The only personal experience noted was that of the founder of LSPIR, Robyn. At one point during the investigation Robyn and Jessica had teamed up with Alice and Don Jr. At the far end of the cemetery in the very back Robyn went to use a walkie talkie to communicate with Melissa's group. She noted that the battery appeared to be low despite all of the walkie talkies being charged to full battery capacity just before arrival to the site. This particular walkie talkie had now only 1/2 the battery power even though it had only been used twice to communicate brief messages to the other teams.
Robyn pointed this out to the rest of the group and Don Jr went to her side to view the battery power. As the two of them stood there side by side they watched in awe as the battery power began to drain despite no buttons being pushed. Within maybe 30 seconds the battery had drained from 1/2 full to absolutely nothing. Robyn then asked Don to use the walkie talkie they had with them so that she could talk to Melissa's group. As soon as Don handed over his walkie talkie, that battery drained from 3/4 the way full to absolutely nothing in a matter of seconds.
It was at that point that Robyn suddenly complained of being very cold. The temperature outside was 68 degrees. Having worn a long sleeve, heavy cotton shirt over a t-shirt to protect her from the bugs she had mentioned several times that she was hot and sweating. The perspiration could be seen on her forehead. But, at this time she was suddenly cold. Jessica took a temp reading with the thermometer and on Robyn at that time it read 49 degrees. Alice put her hand in a spot next to where Robyn was standing and claimed that she could also feel a cold spot. Don Jr. did the same and his experience backed up the others.
After about 45 seconds, the cold spot disappeared. No EMF spikes could be reported by anyone in that area.
Evidence:
Several of the photos taken at the location contained anomalies of one sort or another. Many of these anomalies were of small, bright balls of light. In a few of the pictures a trail can be seen behind these balls of light as if they were in motion. We have determined that these lights cannot be street lights, moonlight, or flashlights. The area is isolated enough by the dense and heavy woods so that no street lights can be seen from the cemetery. The other teams were far enough away from us and out of our line of sight when taking a pictures. Our own team was told to turn off all sources of light before pictures could be taken. Having said that, these anomalies could be bugs. But, it is not certain as to what the actual cause for the lights is at this time.
Another photo appears to have what looks like a mist or fog in it. The picture was lightened to show more detail. We have gone over pictures taken during the day on the day before the investigation. We came to the conclusion that this "mist/fog" could not be clouds due to the fact that the camera was aimed straight ahead and horizontal to the ground. The trees in the background are much to high and dense to have any part of the sky show that low to the ground.
Also, there looks to be something hanging in the tree to the left of the "mist/fog". If you look closely, it appears to be the figure of a man hanging from the tree. We are not exactly sure what this image is and are not ready to call it paranormal. But, we have yet to find a logical explanation for either of the two anomalies in that photograph.
We did get one small piece of audio that we believe cannot be attributed to any member of the group nor people outside of the cemetery. At the time the audio was recorder it had only been Jessica and Robyn. They had both gone off to the southern most side of the cemetery. This area is on the side of the road away from the rest of the graves. They had come across some graves that were buried in leaves, twigs and other debris. They seemed to have been forgotten. At this location, Robyn turned on the digital voice recorder and began to ask if anyone was there and to tell her and Jessica their names. This EVP can be heard in the EVP section of this website.
In the first audio clip, you will hear Robyn speaking, asking for a name. Then you hear a soft mumbled noise and then Robyn speaks again asking for a name. She then says that she suddenly got chills. The second version of this audio is also on the site. We then took that audio and amplified the mumbled part of it so that it can be heard more clearly.
The strange part of that EVP is that everyone that hears it hears something completely different. It has also been determined by the group that this EVP is genuine.
The team would eventually like to go back to this cemetery to see if we can recreate any of the anomalies that we captured the first time. Below are a few of the pictures mentioned. The first three were taken at the walkthrough during the day. The next three will show you the anomalies mentioned above.
